The question of whether every person whose language proficiency is free-flowing can work as an interpreter will always be controversial. Although many people believe that every fluent person can work as an interpreter, others disagree.
In my opinion, even though a person can speak a foreign language fluently, they cannot work. Firstly, even native speakers must get higher education to be an interpreter because they do not know some features of this occupation. It means that a person who speaks a language cannot be an expert. Secondly, this work is not limited to the basic knowledge about any language. An interpreter must have special skills to do his job well. They should react much faster than in ordinary situations. They should make sure that nothing can distract them from what they are doing because they translate speech simultaneously.
Not every native can do that.
However, not all people are ready to share my point of view. They claim that it is enough to know how to understand someone's else speech. It is not necessary to translate any single word. They can convey the main point, and that will be enough.
I cannot fully agree with the statement above. There are plenty of cases when speech must be translated word by word. For instance, when you work with a politician, it is essential not to skip anything because it can be crucial information.
To sum up, I hope that every person should do their job well, so if you are fluent, you can get higher education and become an interpreter.
